Truck Driving Jobs in Germany and Canada: A Practical Guide for Experienced African Drivers
If you have years of heavy-vehicle experience in Lagos, Accra, Nairobi or Johannesburg, you have probably seen adverts promising "visa sponsorship" for truck drivers abroad. Some routes are real. Many adverts are not. Germany has a dedicated legal route for professional drivers from outside the EU, and Canada lets employers recruit foreign workers through a government-controlled process. Neither country, however, accepts an African driving licence as it stands. Most drivers will need local tests, training, language preparation and a genuine employer before they travel. This guide explains the official rules, likely costs, the leads we verified, and how to avoid fraud.

IZONAI Analysis
GERMANY IN DETAIL
Code 95. The accelerated qualification requires a 140-hour course at an approved centre, including at least 10 hours of driving, followed by an exam at the local Chamber of Industry and Commerce.
Indicative costs. These are estimates, not official fixed fees. Driving school lessons, tests and Code 95 training together can cost several thousand euros. A German bus industry association estimates the accelerated qualification alone at about €3,150. Some employers pay for training, but this is not guaranteed. Get it in writing.
Language: law versus employer. Section 24a does not set a fixed German level for this route. It requires that any language skills you need can be gained within the 15-month window. Individual employers often set their own requirement; for example, Schmechel Transport asks for B1 German.
Converting your licence. The six-month conversion deadline is a legal limit, not a promise of exam timing: waiting times and results vary, so plan the conversion with your employer from the start.
Free official support. The Federal Employment Agency's International and Specialized Services (ZAV) offers free advice and job-search support to people abroad. Phone +49 228 713 1313 or register online through the ZAV page listed at the end of this guide.
CANADA IN DETAIL
Employers who want to hire a foreign worker usually apply for a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). Canada's Job Bank foreign-candidates page explains that, without a valid work permit, you can apply only to employers open to international candidates. Always read the "Who can apply for this job?" box on each posting. Many LMIA postings still say "Do not apply if you are not authorized to work in Canada".
The bigger obstacle is licensing. Ontario requires foreign commercial drivers to complete 103.5 hours of Mandatory Entry-Level Training before the road test. Alberta runs its own Class 1 training pathway, and one Alberta school lists its course at CA$10,000 (indicative). Completion times vary, and these steps generally take place in Canada.

WHAT SHOULD AN EXPERIENCED AFRICAN TRUCK DRIVER DO THIS WEEK?
1. Build a professional driving CV. List each employer, dates, and vehicle types and weights (for example, 40-tonne articulated). Add routes, cargo (fuel, refrigerated, containers), licence class and number of years, and any accident-free record. Keep it to two pages. A professional photograph is optional and may be appropriate for some German applications.
2. Document your heavy-vehicle experience. Request signed reference letters on company letterhead showing dates, vehicle class and duties. Get a driving record or licence verification from your licensing authority, and certified translations.
3. Start language preparation. For Germany, enrol in a German course now; many employers ask for B1. For Canada, prepare for an approved English or French test.
4. Contact verified employers only. Use the Schmechel Transport contact above and the official portals. Register with the free ZAV service.
5. Ask the right questions before committing any money:
- Will you pay for the German licence, Code 95 and language course?
- What is my role and salary during the 15-month training period?
- Do you help with accommodation and registration?
- What is the salary once I qualify?
- Have you hired drivers from my country before?
WARNING SIGNS OF RECRUITMENT FRAUD
- You are asked to pay for a job or an LMIA. This is not allowed. A CBC investigation found LMIA jobs being sold illegally for up to CA$45,000.
- A "guaranteed visa". No employer can guarantee an immigration decision. Never pay anyone promising a guaranteed visa. Official visa application fees may apply.
- Contact only by WhatsApp or personal email, with no verifiable company.
- Pressure to pay quickly or send documents before an interview.
- A job that cannot be found on an official portal or the employer's own website.

Eligibility
GERMANY (Section 24a of the Employment Ordinance)
To drive professionally in Germany you need:
- an EU or EEA licence in the right category (usually C or CE for heavy lorries); and
- the EU professional driver qualification, shown as "Code 95" on the licence.
If you have neither, you can still be employed while you obtain both in Germany, provided that:
- you already hold a professional driving licence in your home country;
- your employment contract requires you to take the training and tests;
- your working arrangements let you obtain the German licence, Code 95 and any necessary language skills within 15 months;
- you do not work as a professional driver during this period (you may work in another role, such as warehouse or workshop); and
- the same employer gives you a concrete offer of a driving job once you qualify.
The Federal Employment Agency approves the job inside the visa process; you do not apply for this approval separately.
IMPORTANT FOR DRIVERS AGED 45 OR OVER: you must either earn a minimum gross salary of €55,770 a year (2026 figure) or show adequate pension provision. Check this with any employer before you invest in training.
CANADA (LMIA)
Canada has no dedicated truck-driver visa. Without a valid work permit, you can apply only to employers who say they are open to international candidates. Almost all long-haul jobs also require a Canadian Class 1 (Ontario: Class A) licence.

Who should consider this
Drivers who already hold a professional (heavy-vehicle) licence in their home country, have several years of documented experience, can commit to language study, and are prepared for retesting and training. Germany suits drivers who can find an employer willing to support the 15-month qualification route; drivers aged 45 or over must check the salary or pension rule first.
Who may not be suitable
Drivers without a professional licence or documented heavy-vehicle experience; anyone unwilling to retest or learn the required language; drivers aged 45 or over who cannot meet Germany's salary or pension requirement; and anyone expecting a guaranteed visa or a job that does not require local licensing.
Key conditions
Germany: a third-country licence must be converted to a German licence within six months of registering your residence. This is a legal deadline, not a promise that every test can be booked and passed in that time. Only countries listed in Annex 11 of the Driving Licence Regulations get a simplified process; South Africa and Namibia are the only African countries on the list. Drivers from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and most other African countries must pass both a theory test and a practical test. On the qualification route you do not drive professionally until you hold the German licence and Code 95.
Canada: "LMIA requested" means the employer has applied; it is not an approval. "LMIA approved" means the employer may hire a temporary foreign worker; it is not a job offer to you. A work permit is a separate application to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Employers cannot make you pay for the LMIA. Ontario does not exchange foreign commercial licences.
