Experienced in Piling or Ground Engineering? VSL UK Welcomes International Applications
If you have operated piling rigs, hydraulic grabs or soil-mixing equipment on major foundation projects, this advert is worth reading closely. VSL UK, part of the French construction group Bouygues Construction, is inviting specialist plant operators to register their interest in London-based roles. It says international applications are welcome and that it can provide visa sponsorship support. That is a rare statement for operator roles. It is not, however, a job offer, and it does not mean every applicant will qualify for a UK visa. This guide explains the difference.

IZONAI Analysis
SPONSORSHIP SUPPORT IS NOT THE SAME AS VISA ELIGIBILITY
VSL can offer to sponsor you. Whether you can actually receive a Skilled Worker visa depends on UK immigration rules that apply to you and the job, not on the advert.
The occupation is decided by the employer, who chooses an occupation code for the role. This is the point to check. GOV.UK's list of occupation codes marks 8229 (mobile machine drivers and operatives) and 8159 (construction operatives) as ineligible. Medium-skilled jobs qualify only if they appear on the Immigration Salary List or the Temporary Shortage List, and no plant-operator code appears on the Temporary Shortage List we checked. Some supervisory roles, such as construction and building trades supervisors (5330), are on it.
We do not know which code VSL would use for each role, and an employer may justify a different code for highly specialised work. That is a question for VSL, and the answer decides whether a visa is realistic.
The sponsor also matters. GOV.UK's register of licensed sponsors, dated 4 November 2026, lists no organisation named VSL. It does list Bouygues (U.K.) Limited in London as an A-rated Skilled Worker sponsor. VSL may sponsor through a group company, so ask which company would issue your certificate of sponsorship, and check that name on the register yourself.
No African country is on GOV.UK's list of nationalities exempt from the English requirement, so most African applicants will need an approved B2 English test or a qualifying degree taught in English.
COSTS TO PLAN FOR
From outside the UK, the visa application fee is £819 for up to three years or £1,618 for longer. The immigration healthcare surcharge is usually £1,035 per year, paid upfront. You must also show £1,270 in savings, unless your employer certifies it will support you during your first month. Ask VSL which of these it covers.
HOW TO APPLY
1. Open the VSL advert on the Bouygues Construction careers site (link at the end of this guide).
2. Select "Apply now" and create an account in the talent community.
3. Upload your CV and complete the profile. Name your specialist equipment and projects clearly.
4. If VSL contacts you, ask the questions below before you resign from any job or pay for anything.
QUESTIONS TO ASK VSL
- Which company would sponsor me, and is it on the GOV.UK register of licensed sponsors?
- Which occupation code would this role use, and is it eligible for a Skilled Worker visa?
- What is the salary, and does it meet the visa threshold?
- Which UK plant cards or training will I need, and who pays for them?
- Who pays the visa fee, healthcare surcharge and relocation?
- Is there accommodation support or a start date?

Eligibility
WHAT VSL UK IS LOOKING FOR
The advert is an expression of interest: VSL is building a pool of candidates for its UK site operations teams rather than filling one named vacancy. It lists five specialist roles:
- Cutter operators
- Hydraulic grab operators
- CSM (cutter soil mixing) operators
- Drilling operators
- Piling operators
VSL wants proven experience on specialist ground-engineering equipment, specifically diaphragm wall construction, cutter soil mixing, piling and deep foundations, ground improvement, and large heavy civil engineering projects. Experience on tunnelling, marine, rail, highways or specialist foundation projects also counts. Experience with equipment from leading foundation-equipment manufacturers is "highly desirable". VSL says it is open to "different levels of experience", provided candidates have strong operational knowledge of specialist ground engineering.
This is not a general construction labourer, site manager or health and safety role. Without hands-on experience operating this type of plant, an application is unlikely to progress.
UK SKILLED WORKER VISA BASICS (GOV.UK)
- a job offer from an employer approved by the Home Office as a sponsor;
- a certificate of sponsorship, an electronic record the employer assigns to you;
- a job in an eligible occupation; and
- a salary of usually at least £41,700 a year, or the going rate for the occupation if that is higher.
New applicants must also prove English at B2 level.
